What Is Resin or Epoxy?

Many people interchange the words resin and epoxy. While these items are similar to a point, they represent two different types of materials. Both materials are considered adhesives, but they perform different functions when building custom furniture.

Resin is a type of material that can be molded or shaped. We use resins to help enhance the design of a piece of furniture, add color to a piece, or use a neutral color to fill in flaws in the wood.

Resin is very durable and can be shaped into any form. We have taken boards with unique edges and created tables by finishing out the board with resin. We have also used resins to connect boards to add a design or color.

Epoxy is also an adhesive. However, we use epoxy more for finishing our tables and coating them so that they retain their beauty and are protected while in use. The epoxies we use on our cutting and serving boards is safe to use with food.

Using Resins Enhances Appearance While Reducing Waste

We hand mill all of our wood slabs that are used in our furniture and accessories. It is our goal to use trees that have been cut but are not being used for timber. These trees often end up in a landfill or being shredded for mulch. By using these trees we help protect the environment by not wasting natural resources.

Some of these trees have odd shapes. This does not detract from the beauty of the cut wood. In fact, we believe these unique shapes are part of what enhances the beauty of our furniture. To help turn these pieces into furnishings, we will often add resins to the piece to add color, shape the wood into the dimensions our clients want, or enhance the beauty of the wood.
